Would going bankrupt effect my working tax credits?

i have recently gone bankrupt and was informed that this would eliminate all my depts including a working tax credit bill i was told i owed....i have now re claimed working tax credits only to be told that im not entitled to eny money because of the outstanding dept can some one please advise me of this situation as i now have no money coming in at all and find it extremely unfair that they can stop virtually all my payments until dept is cleared
